Our view of the service
Date of assessment 10 to 17 June 2025. Manor Care Home – Middlewich is a residential care home registered to provide personal care and accommodation for up to 48 adults of all ages. There were 44 people living at the home at the time of this assessment, some of whom were living with dementia. This was an unannounced, responsive assessment, prompted by concerns reported to the Care Quality Commission regarding safe care and treatment. During the assessment we looked at all 5 key questions. At the last inspection the rating was good, at this assessment the rating has changed to requires improvement.
We identified 3 breaches of the legal regulations in relation to safe care and treatment, dignity and respect, and good governance.
We found care plans and risk assessments did not always contain sufficient or up-to-date information to support the delivery of safe care. Risks to people had not been consistently identified or mitigated. People did not always receive their medicines safely. Systems and records were not always sufficiently robust to demonstrate risks to people’s health and safety were effectively monitored. Fire safety concerns were not identified. People were not always treated with dignity and respect. Governance systems in place failed to identify the concerns found during the assessment. The provider was open to feedback and had already started to address the concerns raised.
We found staff were safely recruited, received appropriate training and followed correct procedures for infection prevention and control, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). The provider was transparent with sharing concerns to the local authority. Incidents were investigated and complaints managed with outcomes communicated to those involved. The provider worked in collaboration with partners to successfully reduce unnecessary hospital admissions and falls reductions.
We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.
People's experience of this service
We spoke with people, their relatives, and healthcare professionals about the care provided. Feedback was consistently positive regarding the support offered by staff. People told us their needs were met promptly, and they felt safe and well cared for. However, while people expressed satisfaction with their care, our assessment found elements of care did not meet the expected standards.
Comments included, “The staff are very nice, and yes, they come quickly if I use the buzzer,” “The staff are wonderful. They are all very caring and can't do enough for us” and “The staff are all very nice and all very good at their jobs.”
Relatives spoke highly of the service. They felt confident raising concerns and told us staff knew their loved ones well. One relative said, “It’s a very nice place. Staff are all pleasant and they are very helpful.” Another relative told us, “I think the staff are brilliant. They do an excellent job and deserve a gold medal.”
Staff encouraged people to take part in meaningful activities and supported them to pursue their personal interests within the home. One person told us, “I have always liked gardening, and they are making a new garden at the front.” Another person said, “I do like the hairdresser coming every week and the singers we have in.” A relative told us, “Staff always involve [person].” With another saying, “[person] isn’t really interested in joining in with things but they always ask.”
