Our view of the service
Date of assessment: 12 and 13 March 2026. Bushell House is a care home (without nursing) and is registered to provide support for older people.
The provider had a good learning culture and people could raise concerns. People were protected and kept safe from the risk of abuse. Staff understood and managed risks. There were enough staff with the right skills, qualifications and experience. Managers made sure staff received training and regular appraisals to maintain high-quality care. Staff managed medicines well and involved people in planning any changes.
People were involved in assessments of their needs. Staff reviewed assessments taking account of people’s communication, personal and health needs. Care was based on latest evidence and good practice. People had enough to eat and drink to stay healthy. Staff worked with all agencies involved in people’s care, for the best outcomes and smooth transitions when moving services. They monitored people’s health to support healthy living. Staff made sure people understood their care and treatment to enable them to give informed consent.
People were treated with kindness and compassion. Staff protected their privacy and dignity. People had choice in their care and were encouraged to maintain relationships with family and friends. Staff responded to people in a timely way. The provider supported staff wellbeing.
People were involved in decisions about their care. Staff provided information people could understand. People knew how to give feedback and were confident the provider took it seriously and acted on it. The service was easy to access and worked to eliminate discrimination. People received fair and equal care and treatment. People were involved in planning their care and understood options around choosing to withdraw or not receive care.
Leaders and staff had a shared vision and culture based on listening, learning and trust. Leaders were visible, knowledgeable and supportive, helping staff develop in their roles. Staff felt supported to give feedback and were treated equally, free from bullying or harassment. Staff understood their roles and responsibilities. Managers worked with the local community to deliver the best possible care and were receptive to new ideas. There was a culture of continuous improvement with staff given time and resources to try new ideas.
People's experience of this service
People spoke very highly about Bushell House, the quality of care and interactions with staff. Comments from people included, “I couldn't be safer anywhere. There are plenty of staff who are always available, but it is not intrusive. I have known this home for many years, and their staff retention is good. The home is beautifully maintained and always fresh and clean.” A second example, “There is always plenty of staff to care for me. My tablets are given to me on a regular basis. I don't worry. My room is lovely and it's
mine. I have all I need.”
Relatives were also complimentary, for example 1 relative said, “My [relative] could not be safer. She is continually supported whether it is in her room or around the home. She feels safe when she is having a shower because she is never rushed. The home is kept beautiful. My [relative’s] room is as she and we would want it.” A second relative said, “My [relative’s] health is very good, and he enjoys life here at the home. He gets out
every day for a walk and in good weather enjoys the village. I can always have a chat about the care. The staff are knowledgeable.” Feedback about staff and the management was positive, for example we were told, “The manager is just lovely”, and, “The staff are a great team with good leaders.”
