Our view of the service

Date of Assessment: 9 to 15 April 2025.

This assessment was completed in response to information of concern identified by the local authority during their quality assurance processes.

We assessed all quality statements under the 5 key questions; Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led. The service is a nursing home providing support to up to 32 older people. At the time of our inspection 29 people were living at St Margarets Nursing Home.

We identified 4 breaches of the regulations relating to, person centred care, need for consent, safe care and treatment, and governance.

Governance systems had failed to identify and rectify the significant concerns found at this assessment. People were not receiving person-centred care, significant risks in relation to people’s care needs and the environment of the service had not been identified and mitigated. Medications were not managed safely, and people’s care plans were inaccurate. Systems for assessing people’s capacity in relation to specific decisions were ineffective and organised records had not been maintained of Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards applications.

In instances where CQC have decided to take civil or criminal enforcement action against a provider, we will publish this information on our website after any representations and/ or appeals have been concluded.

People had mixed opinions on the service’s performance but were complimentary of the staff team. Comments received included, “The staff are lovely, I am not just saying that they are lovely and really take care of you” and “They treat me well here”. One relative told us, “Care is good, food is good, room is good”.

People had experienced delays when they requested care and support from staff. People told us this had impacted on their wellbeing. One person said they limited their fluid intake at certain times of the day as they were concerned about possible delays in receiving continence care. People’s comments in relation to delayed care included, “It takes time for staff to come, I’m waiting now” and “I do have to wait for them to assist me, and it can vary as to how long it takes, but they do their best to get around” and “I feel lost here, I don’t see staff for hours”.

People and their visitors told us the service was clean and tidy and most were complimentary of the quality of meals served.
