Caring
Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect and involved as partners in their care.
This service scored 70 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.
Kindness, compassion and dignity
The provider did not consistently promote people’s dignity and person centred experience. Although we observed staff treating people with kindness, there were occasions when staff interactions did not fully uphold people’s dignity.
During one observation, a staff member was standing whilst supporting a person to eat their meal. This reduced opportunities for meaningful engagement and did not promote a dignified dining experience. We provided feedback to the registered manager who acknowledged the issue, and took action to address these concerns through supervisions and monitoring practice.
However, we observed that the majority of interactions between staff and people using the service was positive. Staff demonstrated a good understanding of people’s individual communication methods and were able to recognise non-verbal cues when people were distressed. For example, staff recognised from a person’s facial expressions and behaviour they wanted a change in the music being played. Staff responded promptly and offered different choices. This helped reduce distress and promoted the person’s comfort. Relatives told us staff were kind and caring.
