Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People told us they had independence and could make their own choices. For others who did not use verbal communication as their primary method of communicating with us, we were able to see that staff promoted their independence and encouraged them to do things for themselves around the home. There were no restrictions on visiting; most people chose to go to family homes for visits, rather than the other way round. Relatives told us they were able to keep in very regular touch with people either through visits or phone calls. One relative told us they would like to see their loved one gain more independent living skills. Others told us, “They definitely promote [Name]’s skills and independence”, “Staff respect [Name]’s choices” and “[Name] is quite independent but staff would help if needed.”

Staff told us they placed great importance on maintaining and promoting people’s independence. They were able to explain how they encouraged and supported people to be as independent as possible and to make choices. They told us some people were working towards more independent living options in the longer term. Staff said, “[Registered Manager] always says to staff, ‘Remember, it's [people]’s home’.” Another said, “I like getting to know people; supporting them to lead an independent life. It’s about making choices.”

People's views about the service were sought in ways that they could understand, enabling them to respond easily. Records showed their views were respected and action was taken in response to feedback, to improve their service or widen their opportunities. People’s activities were planned around their individual interests and needs. Great effort had been made to ensure people’s likes and dislikes were identified and respected. People accessed a wide range of community-based activities, based on their own interests and hobbies. This included things like people having membership of a local football club and watching regular matches, going to church, watching horse-racing and going on holidays. People’s social networks were supported and encouraged. People had access to specialist equipment such as mobility aids. They also accessed exercise and health related activities.

We observed staff promoted people’s independence with making choices and encouraged them to take part in activities and household tasks. Staff used prompts and guided people when they needed support.
