During a routine inspection

We spoke with people who use the service and visitors to the service who were visiting their relative or friend. We asked people for their views about the service provided at Harley House and whether they were involved in decisions about the service they receive. People we spoke with told us they were happy with the care and support they received and told us the staff were kind and caring. Comments included: - 'I'm very happy with the physical care I receive.' We spoke with two people who told us they received their medication on time and that they were able to have medication which was prescribed to them when they needed it for the management of their pain.

Visitors we spoke with expressed satisfaction with the care people using the service received and told us they were kept informed of changes in their relative's health. Visitors comments included: - 'Our relative enjoys taking part in the activities, which includes trips out which we have been invited to.' Whilst another visitor told us: - It's become my second home as I visit frequently; my relative has physically improved since being here.'

Visitors told us they found the nursing and care staff to be very attentive to the needs of their relative and that when they visited they were made to feel welcome by the staff. Visitors told us they were always offered refreshments, which for some people included eating a meal with their relative. Visitors told us their relative benefited from the activities provided and by going out into the garden.

During an inspection in response to concerns

People told us they liked living at Harley House and the care was good. One person told us, 'I've improved so much since I've been in here', another said, 'The staff give me a wash every morning and put cream on my skin. It's made such a difference to me, I am much more comfortable.'

When we visited lunch was being served in the dining room, although some people had chosen to have their meal on a tray in their rooms. The food appeared appetising and well-presented. One person told us, 'I had fish today and yesterday I had a vegetarian curry that was nice.'

The people who use the service told us they found the manager and her staff approachable if they needed to raise any concerns. Their comments included,

'If something was wrong I'd speak directly to the manager', and 'If I was unhappy with anything I'd tell the activities organiser.'

Everyone we talked to praised the staff who worked at the home. One person told us, 'The staff are lovely and my visitors say the same. They are polite and they won't enter my room without knocking and they don't disturb me if I have visitors.'

When we visited new windows were being fitted as part of home's improvement plan. One person told us, 'They're upgrading the home all the time. We've recently had new carpets.' Another person said, 'I must praise the cleanliness of the home - my room is hovered and dusted every day. There's never been an unpleasant smell anywhere.'
