Our view of the service

We carried out our assessment of the service from 02 October 2025 to 20 October 2025. Westfield House is a residential home registered for 12 adults with learning disabilities and autism in Dereham, Norfolk. At the time of our assessment, the home was fully occupied. The assessment was prompted due to concerns raised regarding a poor culture within the organisation. We carried out an unannounced site visit on 02 October 2025, an out-of-hours site visit on 06 October 2025, and a planned medicines visit on 14th of October 2025. We continued to access and review information from the provider remotely. We looked at all 5 key questions with all quality statements being assessed.

We expect health and social care providers to guarantee autistic people and people with a learning disability the choices, dignity, independence, and good access to local communities that most people take for granted. Right support, right care, right culture is the statutory guidance which supports the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to make assessments and judgements about services providing support to people with a learning disability and/or autistic people; this guidance was considered as part of the assessment. We completed a Short Observation for Inspection (SOFI) as part of the assessment. We used SOFI as it helped us understand the experience of people using the service and their interaction with staff.

We found that Westfield House was providing a good quality service to the people who use it and was meeting their regulatory responsibilities. Staff mostly told us that they felt they were treated fairly at work and enjoyed their work within the organisation. The internal environment was clean and well maintained, and people’s bedrooms were personalised. The provider had built an extension to increase the living room space, which meant more people could enjoy the communal area. People had regular reviews, and we saw that people attended routine appointments, and care plans were up to date. We found that the concerns raised around poor culture within the organisation had been fully investigated, lessons had been learnt, and the organisation had put policies in place to ensure a better working environment and accountability from all staff.
