Our view of the service

Date of assessment: 19 March 2025 to 28 March 2025.

The Grange Nursing Home is a care home with nursing for up to 24 older people, including people living with dementia. There were 23 people living at the home at the time of our assessment.

People in care homes receive accommodation and nursing or personal care as a single package under one contractual agreement. CQC regulates both the premises and the care provided, and both were looked at during this assessment.

We carried out this responsive assessment, including an unannounced site visit, as there had been concerns about people’s safety. We found the provider had worked with the local authority to investigate when concerns were raised and improvements made where necessary.

There were always enough appropriately-qualified staff on duty to meet people’s needs and keep them safe. The home had a consistent staff team, which meant people received good continuity of care.

Staff kept the home clean and hygienic. People’s medicines were managed safely. Lessons were learned from incident investigations, and learning was shared with staff. Staff understood their responsibility to recognise and report abuse, and knew how to do this.

Staff had the training and support they needed to carry out their roles. The manager was a skilled and experienced leader who led by example in their attitudes and behaviours.

There were effective systems in place to monitor the safety and quality of the service. The manager and staff worked well with other professionals to achieve good outcomes for people.

People's experience of this service

We visited the home on 19 March 2025 and spoke with 5 people who lived there and 4 visiting relatives. After the visit, an Expert by Experience spoke with 9 relatives by phone to hear their feedback about the care their family members received. An Expert by Experience is a person who has personal experience of using or caring for someone who uses this type of care service.

People were cared for in a safe, homely environment by staff who knew them and their needs well.

People received personalised care that was tailored to their individual needs. Staff understood risks involved in people’s care and managed these well.

People were supported to access healthcare input when they needed it. Staff were observant of any changes in people’s needs and responded promptly if their health or wellbeing deteriorated.

Staff understood the importance of obtaining people’s consent before providing their care. If people lacked capacity to make decisions about their care, procedures were in place to ensure decisions were made in their best interests.

Staff were exceptionally kind, caring and responsive to people’s needs. Staff treated people with respect and maintained their dignity when providing care.

People were able to choose how they spent their time, and their wishes were respected by staff. People’s cultural and religious needs were met.

People had opportunities to participate in meaningful activities and to be part of their local community. People’s families were encouraged to remain involved in their lives and to become involved in the life of the home.
