Staff should be properly trained and supervised, and have the chance to develop and improve their skills (outcome 14)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by competent staff.

How this check was done

We reviewed all the information we hold about this provider, carried out a visit on 12/04/2012, observed how people were being cared for, looked at records of people who use services, talked to staff and talked to people who use services.

Our judgement

The provider was meeting this regulation. People were cared for by staff who were supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard.

User experience

The registered manager told us and staff confirmed that there was an intense induction process when they started working for the service which involved them shadowing a senior member of staff. This helped staff to be clear about their duties and introduced them to the individual needs of the people who used the service.

Staff told us and records showed that staff received relevant training. We saw that most members of staff were qualified to NVQ level 2 and above and were supported in obtaining further qualifications. We saw staff training records which identified any training needs and the dates when training updates were required. We saw that training needs had been identified and appropriate training booked including update training in medication and equality and diversity. Staff received appropriate professional development and were able, from time to time, to obtain relevant qualifications.

Staff told us that they received regular appraisals and supervision with their manager or a senior about their job in general, their relationships with people who lived at the home and their own developmental needs. Staff also told us that they felt able to approach the manager at any time for support. One member of staff said, “The manager is someone you can go and talk to if you have a problem.” Another said, “The manager is very approachable.” Staff felt confident in raising any issues about their role with the registered manager.
