How this check was done

We reviewed all the information we hold about this provider, carried out a visit on 12/04/2012, observed how people were being cared for, looked at records of people who use services, talked to staff and talked to people who use services.

Our judgement

The provider was meeting this regulation. People's privacy, dignity and independence were respected.

User experience

We saw that the people who lived in the home were treated with respect and were able to make their own choices.

We saw that people's care plans included an assessment of their needs prior to their admission. We saw that people were encouraged to visit the home on several occasions and for increasing periods of time.This was to ensure that the home could meet their needs prior to a decision being made about moving in.

Each person living there had a key worker who was responsible for ensuring their needs were met. One person told us they felt they could discuss things with their key worker.

People were well presented and wearing clothes that reflected their individual choices. People told us that they could choose what clothes they wanted to wear. One person told us that they bought their own clothes out of their allowance.

People told us, and we saw from the records, that menus were formulated around their likes and dislikes. Each week people were given menus from which they could choose what they wanted to eat in the coming week. One person told us, “The food is good. I like the food. You get two choices.” Another person told us, “There is a good choice with the food.”

During lunch we saw that that the tables were set and the meals served in a manner that maintained dignity and choice. We observed that staff joined people for lunch and it was a time to talk and socialise.

We saw that people who lived there had regular meetings. We looked at the minutes of the meetings. Each meeting had a different theme, such as medication, fire safety or infection control. People were given information to help them understand the support provided and keep them safe.

We saw that the meetings also gave people the opportunity to discuss activities, in house entertainment, holidays, menus, any changes they would like to see or problems they would like to discuss. In one meeting people had said what foods they would like to eat. We saw that some of the dishes had been included on subsequent menus. In another meeting people had suggested places they would like to go on holiday. We saw that a holiday had been booked at one of the places suggested.

We saw that people were supported in taking part in domestic tasks around the home such as laying the tables for lunch, making their bed and tidying their own room. One person told us, “I tidy my own bedroom. The bedrooms have a monthly clean. I am present when that takes place. I like to be there when they do it.” People were encouraged to maintain their independence and their right to privacy was respected.

Two people told us that they had kettles in their bedroom so that they could make their own hot drinks. There was also a facility for everyone to make their own hot drinks throughout the day. One person told us, “If you are capable, you will make drinks for other residents who are not capable.”

We saw that people were actively involved in making decisions as to how they spent their day. One person told us that they went to a cafe every morning for a full cooked breakfast. Another person told us they had been out all day, but chose not to participate in the activities in the home. Another said that although a hairdresser regularly visited the home, they preferred to have their hair done in Lye or by one of the staff.

Staff told us and records showed that they understood the diversity of people living in the home. Staff sympathetically supported people in making lifestyle choices whilst maintaining confidentiality. People's diversity, values and human rights were respected.

We observed staff demonstrating respect for people's privacy and dignity throughout our visit. People were offered discreet support with personal care in the privacy of their own bedroom. People told us, and we saw, that staff sought permission before entering people's bedrooms. One person told us that staff never entered the bathroom until she had buzzed for them.
