Our view of the service
This assessment was carried out between 27 April 2026 and 14 May 2026. Kynance Residential Home provides accommodation and personal care for older people, some of whom may be living with dementia. The service was previously rated good in 2018. This assessment was commenced as part of the return to good methodology but was expanded to a comprehensive assessment following concerns identified during the inspection.
People and their relatives provided positive feedback about the care provided. Staff worked in partnership with external professionals and were able to meet people’s health and care needs. There was a consistent staff team who knew people well, and care plans contained detailed information about people’s needs and preferences.
However, we identified concerns relating to how care was delivered in practice. Care was not always provided in a person-centred way, and some people, particularly those cared for in bed, received support according to routine practices rather than their individual preferences. There were also examples where care had not been consistently delivered, which impacted on people’s dignity and experience.
Governance systems were not always effective in identifying and addressing risks. Audits and monitoring processes had not identified concerns found during the inspection, including task-led care practices and aspects of care delivery. There was also a failure to ensure statutory requirements were consistently met, including notifying the Care Quality Commission of a significant incident.
Leaders were approachable and staff spoke positively about working at the service; however, improvements were required to ensure that systems and processes were consistently effective in monitoring care and driving improvement.
We found the provider was in breach of the legal regulation relating to governance of the service.
We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.
People's experience of this service
People and their relatives were positive about the care and support provided at Kynance Residential Home. People and their relatives told us staff were kind, caring and approachable, and that there was a consistent staff team who knew people well. One person told us, “Carers are very kind, all staff lovely and helpful,” and relatives described staff as caring and supportive. People told us they felt safe living at the service and were comfortable raising any concerns with staff or the management team.
People described being able to make day-to-day choices about their care and routines, including when to get up and how to spend their time. People spoke positively about the food provided and the opportunities to take part in activities, including exercise sessions and social activities, which supported their wellbeing and helped promote social interaction.
Some people were not able to verbally share their experiences of care. We used observation, including a structured observation tool, to understand people’s experiences. These observations showed that while there were positive interactions, staff were not always consistently engaged with people in communal areas, and some people experienced periods where there was limited interaction or stimulation.
While people expressed general satisfaction with their care, our assessment found that care was not always delivered in a flexible and person-centred way. Some aspects of care were delivered according to routine practices, which did not always reflect people’s individual preferences and needs. This included occasions where people did not receive support at times that suited them, which impacted on their overall experience of care.
