Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

 

This is the first assessment for this service. This key question has been rated good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

People told us staff were polite and kind to them and felt staff knew them well. Professionals told us staff were very sensitive to a person’s particular needs and wishes around personal care, staff valued the person’s contributions to care planning arrangements and also staff knew the person well. Professionals told us that the people who the service supported, spoke positively about their home, expressed confidence in the staff’s ability to care for them and, when staff have managed crisis situations well, this has enhanced the person’s confidence and trust in the service. A professional told us they were always greeted with respect.

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.

Care records did not always include goals and aspirations. However, the provider told us they would review all the care records. Professionals gave us positive feedback regarding people being treated as individuals. We were told, “The service is flexible and adaptable to the person’s needs…the service has gone above and beyond expectations” and improvements were made to the garden as the person had expressed an interest in doing this. We were also told the person chose the internal decoration of their home and they were “proud to show off [their] home to visitors.” Professionals also told us, “They support [person] to feel respected and valued, as part of the home and encourage [person] to make [their] own decisions” and, “The key worker demonstrated a clear understanding of [their] needs and how best to support [person].”

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. Care plans included information on when people required support. For example, care plans included information for staff to familiarise the person with public transport and where people could prepare their own meals.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. Care records included information such as community integration, mental health, personal care, oral hygiene and nutrition and hydration to be able to respond to people’s needs. A person told us they were supported by the registered manager and staff when they were feeling unwell.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider always cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff, and was exceptional at supporting and enabling staff to always deliver person-centred care. Comments included, “The service accommodates my wellbeing exceptionally well, which in turn allows me to provide excellent care to our patients and motivates me to do the best I can” and “We also have a monthly performance award for staff, and we send birthday cards to employees.” Staff told us they were treated respectfully, exceptionally well, the registered manager was available 24 hours a day to support staff and when extra support was needed the registered manager and team leader stepped in and worked alongside as part of the team. Staff told us Chiron Care made staff feel confident, happy in doing their work which supported staff to work to the best of their ability and the support they received from the service contributed to a positive working environment along with “good outcomes” for the residents.
