During an inspection in response to concerns

A visiting relative told us that generally they felt the standard of care was alright. Another person said it was not the most 'glamorous' place they had come across. Other people living in the home told us the home was 'ok as long as you did not require too much help and did as much as you could for yourself'.

Following concerns raised as a result of our inspection, on the 12 September 2012 and further information of concern, received at the Care Quality Commission (CQC), a follow up visit was arranged, for the 29 November 2012. Due to concerns identified on site on 29 November this inspection was extended to cover 30 November.

We found during our follow up visit that the service had not improved. The service provided had deteriorated and we were so concerned that we made an urgent referral under the multi-agency Hertfordshire Vulnerable Adult procedure, while we were at the service on 29 November 2012. Representatives from the Hertfordshire Older People and Physical Disability Team and the Hertfordshire Police Harm Reduction Unit joined us on site, to review the situation and assess the risk to people living at The Manor Lodge to ensure their safety.

During a routine inspection

People we spoke with were pleased with the service and care provided. A person said 'I am well looked after.' Another person commented, 'Staff are all right. We get on well.'

People confirmed that they 'have choices' and that they 'can do what they want.' A person said 'I am allowed to bring my own settee.' A person said that the food served 'is very nice' and that there is 'a choice of menu.'

When asked about the activities a person said, 'We have activities. We have music and exercise every Tuesday. We have a quiz game. You get prizes when you win. I enjoy it.' This was echoed by another person who said, 'I like bingo. Sometimes I win prizes. We have a quiz as well.'
