Our view of the service

Date of assessment: 10 March to 15 April 2026. Giles Shirley Hall is a residential care home providing accommodation and personal care for a maximum of 12 people with a learning disability and autistic people. At the time of our assessment, there were 10 people living at the service who were receiving personal care. We undertook this assessment due to the age of the rating and to check improvements had been made since the last assessment where the rating was requires improvement. We found improvements had been made and the overall rating has changed to good.

We assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted.

People were treated with kindness and compassion, treated as individuals and their preferences were supported. People had choice in their care and were encouraged to maintain relationships with family and friends.

People were safe and protected from avoidable harm. The provider had a positive learning culture, and staff understood how to recognise and escalate concerns. The environment was safe, and the risk of infection was managed effectively. Staff were recruited safely and received appropriate training to carry out their roles. Some improvements were required in relation to medicines management.

People’s needs were reviewed regularly, and care plans contained person-centred information that reflected people’s individual needs and preferences. The provider worked well with other health and social care professionals, and people had access to other services when required. Staff supported people to live healthier lives.

Leaders and staff had a shared vision and culture based on listening, learning and trust. Leaders were visible, knowledgeable and supportive, helping staff develop in their roles. Staff felt supported to give feedback and were treated equally, free from bullying or harassment. Governance systems were in place however some shortfalls were identified in relation to the documentation available for mental capacity assessments and best interest decisions.

Managers were responsive to feedback provided throughout the assessment.
