People were able to make unwise decisions and take some risks. One person sometimes chose to leave the service while upset or anxious. When this occurred staff would accompany the person at a slight distance and offer any support, reassurance or assistance when required.

People were able to make decisions and choices in relation; to how and when support was provided, where they spent their time, which activities they engaged with and what they ate. Staff understood the importance of respecting people’s decisions and told us, “People choose what they want for dinner and tea, if they want to get up, what to do, things like that.”

We heard staff asking people where they wanted to sit and who with, and how they wanted to spend their time, staff responded to their requests.

People spoke positively of their care staff and were confident requesting assistance when needed. People told us, “The carers know what they are doing and are extremely nice” and relatives said, “[Ponsandane] is good, everybody is friendly. That is what matters.”
