Score: 3

Independence, choice and control

Score: 2

The provider did not always promote people’s independence, so people did not always know their rights and have choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

People looked clean and well presented; however, we found people’s personal care records were not always accurately completed therefore we could not be sure certain tasks were being completed by staff, including records relating to oral hygiene and nail care. Some people’s nails were also visibly dirty when we spoke with them. The registered manager said they would arrange for this concern to be discussed with staff about the importance of keeping accurate records, and we observed this discussion taking place at the next early morning staff shift handover meeting.

The home employed an activities coordinator and people said there were activities available and enough stimulation throughout the day. One person said, “I like to join in with the activities, and I like to do wordsearch. I sit outside on the balcony when the weather is good, and my daughter takes me out either to her house or we go shopping.” Another person said, “The activities lady tries to encourage us to get involved with bingo and dominoes. There is plenty to do.”

People were supported to be as independent as possible by staff. This included eating and drinking, mobilising with a Zimmer frame and completing aspects of their personal care. One person said, “I have been here a few weeks. I find it lovely; this is the best. The staff are kind, caring and patient.”

People felt they were treated with dignity, respect and were well supported by staff. People could have a shower when required. Staff knew people well including their needs, likes and dislikes and were all spoken with using their first names. We observed staff supporting people to go to the bathroom and then back to their bedroom in a respectful way.

People were supported to maintain relationships with friends and family who could visit the home throughout the day.
