Our view of the service
Date of assessment: 31 July to 13 August 2026. Pendene House is a care home for people over 65 years and people living with dementia and mental health conditions. At the time of our assessment 14 people were using the service.
People were protected from abuse and avoidable harm because staff had training and understood their responsibilities. They knew how to recognise the signs of abuse and what action to take should they suspect it.
Risks to people’s health and wellbeing were identified and planned for. Staff knew what to do to reduce risks and followed people’s individual risk assessments and care plans.
Staff had training around the safe management of medicines. They followed safe policies and procedures and made sure people had their prescribed medicines at the right time and in the right way.
The service was visibly clean and hygienic throughout. The provider was planning to refresh décor through bedrooms and corridors. Routine maintenance and safety checks were carried out at required intervals to make sure the premises and equipment were safe and in good working order.
Staff had training when they first began working at the service as well as ongoing training to make sure they continued to deliver care and support at expected standards. They received supervision meetings with their line managers to discuss any learning or development needs. Staff felt supported and were motivated to achieve good outcomes for people.
Staff supported people with kindness and compassion. They encouraged people’s independence and protected their privacy and dignity.
People’s protected characteristics under the Equality Act were known and met. There was a culture where staff challenged inequalities and sought to find solutions to the barriers people face.
There was a clear staff structure, and staff understood their roles and responsibilities. Systems for managing risks and improving quality were effective, people’s and staff’s feedback was sought and used for ongoing improvements
