Our view of the service

Clarence House is a residential care home registered to provide care and support for up to 29 people. The service provides care for older adults and people living with dementia. At the time of our inspection, 19 people were using the service. During the inspection we assessed all the quality statements under the key questions of safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led. The inspection took place between 10 June and 11 June 2025. People had up-to-date risk assessments and care plans in place that reflected their individual needs and helped keep them safe. Staff followed safeguarding procedures and understood how to raise concerns both internally and externally. They expressed confidence in the registered manager’s response to concerns. People can only be deprived of their liberty to receive care and treatment when this is in their best interests and legally authorised under the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA). In care homes, and some hospitals, this is usually through MCA application procedures called the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS). We checked whether the service was working within the principles of the MCA, whether appropriate legal authorisations were in place when needed to deprive a person of their liberty, and whether any conditions relating to those authorisations were being met. Recruitment practices were safe and robust. Pre-employment checks, including references and Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks, had been completed before staff began working with people. Interview records showed that values-based recruitment was used to assess candidates' suitability for working in care. New staff completed a comprehensive induction programme. Ongoing supervision, training, and competency checks ensured staff had the skills and knowledge to meet people's needs safely and effectively. There were enough staff to meet people’s needs. Staff said they felt supported and valued. A staff member told us, “I feel proud to be here, we have a wonderful team.”

People's experience of this service

People and their relatives spoke positively about the service. They told us their needs were met, and they were happy with the care provided at Clarence House. Feedback gathered during the inspection showed that people and relatives were positive about the care and support provided. People felt involved in decisions about their care and were supported to make choices in line with their preferences. Relatives expressed confidence in the registered manager and the staff team. A relative told us, “As a family we are very lucky that our loved one is cared for.” Another said, “Staff are very helpful and always smiling. They are angels on earth.” These views were consistent with the broader feedback we received. We observed care was delivered in person-centred ways that respected people’s dignity, privacy and human rights. People were empowered to take part in planning their care. Activities and events were inclusive and enjoyed by those living at the service. Interactions between staff and people were warm and respectful. Staff treated people with kindness, and there was a clear culture of compassion and attentiveness within the service.
