Our view of the service
Date of assessment: 4 March to 9 April. Leighton House Retirement Home is a residential care home registered to support 30 people, many of whom have dementia. At the time of our assessment there were 28 people living at the service. The assessment included 2 on site visits, with additional information and evidence reviewed remotely.
We identified breaches in relation to safe care and treatment, fit and proper persons employed and good governance.
Improvements were required to ensure care and support were tailored to individual needs and that the home was properly maintained and suitable for people with dementia. However, the home was clean and had a homely atmosphere, and people were protected from abuse and were kept safe.
There were enough staff with the right skills and qualifications. Improvements were needed to ensure the recruitment process was robust and all the relevant checks were included. Staff received training and supervision which helped to support their wellbeing. Improvements were needed to ensure medicines were managed, administered and documented correctly.
People’s health was monitored and appropriate referrals were made to other healthcare professionals when necessary. People had enough to eat and drink and were treated with kindness and compassion. Staff sought consent from people and protected people’s dignity.
The registered manager was experienced and visible in the service. Quality assurance systems needed improvement to ensure that there was sufficient oversight of the service. People and their relatives were able to provide feedback and staff said they felt supported by the registered manager.
We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.
