Independence, choice and control
The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.
People had plenty of choice and control over their lives. We observed staff offering choices and promoting independence wherever possible. Staff were able to describe how they supported people’s independence, choice, and control by offering options throughout the day, including what clothes they would like to wear, where they would prefer to spend their time within the service, and their choices around meals and activities.
During activities, people were encouraged to participate as independently as they could, while also being given options over how they took part and which activity they joined.
Choice was also promoted through the mealtime experience, including the ‘silver service,’ a person-centred approach to providing meals in line with individual preferences. People and relatives told us they were treated with kindness and respect, and their wishes and preferences were consistently promoted. Comments from people included, “Staff are always around, and they genuinely care” and “They will bring you anything you need and will come as quickly as possible.”
