Caring

Good

10 March 2026

At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good.

The service consistently treated people with kindness, compassion, and dignity, with staff showing empathy and respect to patients, families, and colleagues. Care was personalised, confidentiality maintained, and emotional support rated highly by bereaved relatives. Staff went above and beyond, including fulfilling a patient’s final wish. Immediate needs were met promptly, with coordinated care, quick responses to call bells, and access to specialist equipment.

This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

This service scored 75 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

We scored the service as 3. The evidence showed a good standard. The service always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

We observed that patients and their loved ones were treated with kindness, compassion, dignity, and respect. They were seen as individuals; their care and treatment plans reflected their needs and were personal to them.

Staff at the service were respectful and kind when they worked with partners, patients, and their families.

Staff ensured that patient’s confidentiality was maintained within the hospice and when information was provided to external partners.

Staff were present and available for patients. It was evident in the approach of staff that patients were respected and valued as individuals. Staff treated patients and their families in a very caring way, showing kindness, compassion, dignity, and respect when approaching them and this was demonstrated in the feedback from patients and their loved ones.

The service’s FAMCARE results showed that 100% of relatives and loved ones of patients who had passed away at the hospice felt that there was good emotional support for both their loved one and themselves and that their dignity had been respected.

Patients and their relatives said that staff showed kindness, compassion and dignity.

We saw an example where staff had gone above and beyond to fulfil a patient’s “bucket-list” wish by arranging for her to perform to an audience, as she loved to sing and had previously been in a band.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

We scored the service as 3. The evidence showed a good standard. The service listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

The service had both a chapel and a multi-faith room, which could be used by anyone using or visiting the service.

Patient care was coordinated well, and the service and partners worked well together. Patient and families were involved in discussions and decisions around their future care, and how this would be provided if they were transferred to another care provider. This reassured them and ensured continuity.

If patients needed specialist or adaptive equipment their needs were assessed, and the service had a physiotherapist and a social worker on site. When call bells were activated, staff responded quickly.

The service offered and signposted to various bereavement support and resources. A counselling service was in place, and support was given by face-to-face appointments, telephone or virtually. The service ran bereavement cafes for loved ones and had found these to be a great success and support for the local community.
