During an inspection looking at part of the service

We spoke with two people living at Hurstead House Nursing Home, and the relatives of one person. People living at the home told us "It's great, I'm very happy here" and "We do things in the afternoons and can choose what to do, like a vote". One person told us that they had been able to bring some of their own furniture when they moved in to make them feel more at home. We also heard "Staff are very very good and you get well looked after here" and "Staff are all good". The relatives of one person said that different relatives visited at different times every day, and they were all confident that the care provided was good.

We saw the results of the most recent resident and relative's survey that had been compiled in March 2012. Everyone who responded said that staff were approachable all of the time, and everyone said they would recommend the home to other people. Comments included "[My relative] has improved in both health and cleanliness since she arrived at Hurstead" and "I am sure [my relative] is much happier than she was at home". We also saw "I'm glad [my relative] is getting really looked after and I don't need to worry as he really likes it here" and "The staff are very friendly and nothing you ask them is too much trouble".

During a routine inspection

We spoke with a number of people living at Hurstead House Nursing Home. People were overall positive about their living experience in the home. One person said 'Yes it's all right here' and another person told us 'I don't think the staff could do any more'. One person told us they were looking forward to breakfast. They said that the staff were 'Wonderful. The best I have ever known'. One person said 'Some staff are better than others' and this person told us that when they ask for assistance some staff say 'Just a minute, there are other patients'.

A healthcare professional told us that overall, they believed the nursing to be 'quite good' and there was good communication between the home and them.
