Our view of the service

Date of assessment: 28 July and 4 August 2025.

Fernbrook House is a nursing home registered to support up to 30 older people, some of whom maybe living with dementia. At the time of our assessment, they were supporting 27 people at the service. The service is in a residential area and accommodates people in an adapted building across 2 floors.

The service had made improvements and is no longer in breach of regulation. The registered manager had systems in place to provide good oversight and governance at the service. The provider had made improvements to the environment and worked closely with the registered manager to improve outcomes for people.

Care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way which was intended to ensure people's safety and welfare. There were enough staff to meet people’s needs. People were cared for safely by staff who had been recruited and employed after appropriate checks had been completed. Staff received the correct training and supervision to support people safely. People were supported to take their medicines safely by staff who had the correct skills to support them.

Care was person-centred and promoted people’s well-being, communication needs, dignity, privacy and human rights. People were supported to have fluid and nutrition that met their needs and preferences. Health was monitored through regular checks and the involvement of the appropriate healthcare professionals. Referrals to appropriate health services were made promptly and recommendations acted on.

People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests; the policies and systems in the service supported this practice.

People's experience of this service

People we spoke with were positive about their experience at the service. People found staff to be supportive and caring, whilst encouraging their independence. One person told us, “I like living here, staff look after me well.” We observed staff spending time with people and were responsive to their needs.
