Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. We observed staff to treat people with kindness and compassion throughout our inspection. It was evident staff knew people well and understood their individual needs. Relatives confirmed their family members were treated well. One relative told us, “[Staff] are very caring, I can see how they care for [person], they are well cared for, always clean and always going out.” Another relative told us, “The care is good, they look after [person]”.

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. People’s care plans provided staff with detailed information on people’s preferences and relationships that were important to them. Staff were knowledgeable on how people liked to be cared for. We found arrangements were in place to ensure people could pursue their interests. The registered manager and staff team spoke passionately about ensuring people had opportunities that reflected their preferences and supported their wellbeing.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People were supported to make choices that gave them control over their daily lives. This included choosing the activities they took part in and what they wore. Staff supported people to personalise their home and helped people to maintain relationships with those who were important to them.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. People’s care plans provided staff with guidance on responding to people’s immediate needs in a safe and person-centred way. For example, where people presented with feelings of distress, they provided staff with strategies on how to support the person in a reassuring way. We also found staff had acted promptly when there was a change in a person's health and promptly sought medical advice.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 2

The provider did not consistently prioritise or support staff wellbeing. We found that some staff were allocated consecutive 12‑hour shifts covering both day and night duties. Additionally, some staff were expected to attend training sessions immediately after completing a waking night shift. These extended working hours did not support staff wellbeing. We also noted that the staffing rota was not always issued in advance, for example, staff often had to wait until Friday each week to learn their shifts for the following week.
