7 December 2012

During a routine inspection

There were 23 people at the home on the day of our visit. We talked with 14 people about the support and care they received.

We met the registered manager and four care workers and talked with them about how they supported people who used the service.

People had positive views about what life was like at Bernash. Comments people told us included, 'The staff make sure you are supported properly throughout'. 'The staff are all lovely girls'. 'You will not find a better home'. 'It's a warm and friendly environment'.

People were receiving an effective service at Bernash. They were supported by enough skilled and competent staff to properly meet their needs.

23 May 2012

During an inspection looking at part of the service

People were not asked for their feedback about outcome 20, which concerns the requirement for the registered person to tell us about certain events which may occur in the home. These include incidents, such as injuries that affect the health, safety and welfare of the people who use the service.

When we last inspected the home in November 2011, we had found that some notifiable incidents had not been reported to us. As a result, we did not know how the incidents had been responded to, or have an accurate picture of how many incidents had arisen, as required to inform our ongoing monitoring of the provider.

We visited the home again on 24 May 2012 and judged that the registered person was now meeting outcome 20 and complying with the associated regulation concerning the notification of incidents.

9 November 2011

During an inspection in response to concerns

We carried out a visit to Bernash Residential Home on 9 November 2011 following concerns that were raised with us.

We spoke to two people living at the home.

We were told:

'Food is good'

'I am asked about my views'

'Get looked after well'

'Quite happy with support I am getting'

'I know about my care plan'

'I am involved in my review'

'Cant fault the staff'

We asked some people if they felt safe and were told;

'Yes couldn't get any better'

'I feel comfortable /I feel safe'

We were told by a family member that their relative was well looked after and that staff were very caring. They said:

'Carers very happy, jolly people, interact with residents really well'.

They told us they had observed their relatives behaviour when returning to the home after a trip out and that they had 'No reservations about coming back to home after being out'.
