During a routine inspection

People told us they felt safe and well cared for. They commented on the professionalism of the staff and welcomed the support they received whilst they used the services. We observed people receiving care and support and saw that they were treated with respect and dignity at all times.

Those members of staff we spoke with told us of the support and guidance they received from the management and they went on to explain how this improved their own confidence in the role. Those care support staff we spoke with were confident in their role and the environment they shared with people using the service appeared busy but well controlled.

We found the provider regularly assessed the service in order to ensure that all aspects of it were safe and suitable to best meet the care needs of people who used the service.

During an inspection in response to concerns

We spoke to three people who used the service during our visit. They told us the staff were very busy and it meant they may have to wait for assistance. One person told us "The staff are always very busy and I do have to wait sometimes for help, but they always come back as quickly as they can." We saw that staff were very busy during our visit and we observed some people requiring the assistance of two members of staff for specific needs. This did mean that the remaining staff were required to provide care to more people.

The staffing numbers for night shifts were considered unsuitable to meet the care needs of people currently using the service. A number of people had a high dependency on staff to support them, these needs were recognised by the provider but would not be met due to the small numbers of night staff.

We checked the moving and handling equipment and found that the maintenance and cleanliness of some items did not meet the required standard. As a result we judged the provider was failing to meet the required level of compliance. We discussed this with the management and we requested that they provide us with a plan of action to rectify this issue.

During a routine inspection

People who used the service told us that the care and treatment they received was delivered in a professional manner which respected their rights and dignity. They also told us that they felt safe and that their personal choices were respected and acted upon.

We found the provider to have effective systems in place to ensure people using the service were kept safe and that the care they received was appropriate.

During an inspection in response to concerns

People told us they were satisfied with their care at George Hythe House. One person said, 'The staff help me bath, they are very good.' A visitor told us, 'We have always been happy with our relative's care here.'

People who were able to give their views told us they felt safe at the home. One commented, 'If I wasn't happy about my care or anything else I'd tell one of the girls.' A visitor said, 'We have had a few niggles over the years, like clothing getting mixed up or going missing, but nothing serious and we always speak out if we aren't happy about anything.'

People told us that both group and one-to-one activities were provided in the home. One person said, 'The staff took me and my friend out in our wheelchairs. One pushed me and the other one pushed my friend. We went and sat by the river.' A visitor told us, 'The staff keep my relative engaged by doing activities with her.'
