People should be cared for by staff who are properly qualified and able to do their job (outcome 12)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by staff who are fit, appropriately qualified and are physically and mentally able to do their job.

How this check was done

Our judgement

The provider is compliant with this standard. People were supported and cared for by staff who had undergone a robust recruitment process to determine there suitability to work with vulnerable adults.

User experience

We asked people who used the agency if they felt the care staff were suitable, honest and trustworthy. Comments included, “All the staff are very straight forward, we have no blarney with them. They are excellent, very knowledgeable and caring” and “The staff are all brilliant, I have no qualms about them at all.”

Other evidence

Staff told us that they were only employed following an effective recruitment and selection process that complied with legislation. We were able to confirm this as records showed that a thorough recruitment process had been undertaken. Potential employees were required to provide a Curriculum Vitae and undergo an interview process. Two written references were also required together with a Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) check, an Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) check, if needed, and proof of identity prior to commencing employment. This showed that the provider had an effective recruitment process to ensure the safety of people in their care.

We examined the agency's staff training records. They showed that following the staff induction process a comprehensive ongoing training programme was in place.

Members of staff told us that they felt they were appropriately qualified to perform their duties and also confirmed that the agency provided them with the necessary training opportunities. Comments included, “The training is just fantastic and people are always at hand if we (care staff) are unsure about anything at all.”

This showed that the provider had taken the necessary steps to ensure their employees were confident and competent in performing their duties.
