Delivering evidence-based care and treatment

Score: 3

Care, treatment and support were delivered in line with legislation, standards and evidence-based guidance, including the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and other expert professional bodies, to achieve effective outcomes. The service used policies, care and treatment pathways, and clinical protocols and standard operating procedures. The service participated in relevant local and national audits which were based on national guidance, standards and legislation, including NICE guidance, the Royal College of Surgeons, and the Health and Safety Executive. From an audit summary from January to December 2023 we saw there was on overall compliance of over 90% during most of the year. We reviewed minutes from the medical advisory committee (MAC) which showed consultants reviewed patient outcomes, patient experience of treatment and recovery and efficient use of resources.

Staff followed up-to-date policies to plan and deliver high quality care according to evidence-based practice and national guidance. We were told of an example where staff were concerned regarding a patients capacity to grant consent for a surgical procedure. Staff felt confident to challenge the decision until they had neccessary assurance and the procedure was put on hold until this was resolved. We observed a pre assessment clinic which was delivered in line with legislation and evidence-based good practice.
