Our view of the service
Date of Assessment: 25 and 26 February 2026
We conducted an onsite unannounced assessment visit of Nuffield Health Exeter Hospital. We carried out the assessment due to the age of ratings of the service. We assessed all quality statements from the safe, effective, responsive, caring and well-led key questions.
The outpatient department comprised of 12 consultant rooms and 3 treatment rooms. There was a physiotherapy suite and a gym area as well as areas in which staff carried out optimisation checks and pre-assessment check for patients requiring surgery. The Nuffield Health Exeter Hospital had a pathology laboratory on site which was not inspected at this time.
The hospital’s core service is surgery. Where outpatient arrangements mirrored those in surgery, findings have been reported in the surgery section.
During the assessment, we spoke with staff, leaders and service users. We reviewed care records, policies, and other documentation relevant to the service.
We rated the service as good. Staff delivered compassionate, person‑centred care and described a collaborative culture where they felt well supported by both colleagues and the management team. Staff understood how to report incidents and learning from these was shared across the team. They also had access to a wide range of e‑learning and were up to date with their mandatory training.
People's experience of this service
Feedback from people who used services was positive. Patients commented all staff were “friendly and helpful”. People felt they were receiving considerate support from competent staff.
People told us the service was very responsive, and they didn’t have to wait long to be seen by a nurse or a clinician. Staff kept patients informed if there was any delay to their appointment times. There were signs in the waiting room for patients to contact a staff member if they had been waiting more than 15 minutes.
Patients said the environment was clean and tidy, including the toilets. However, most patients said they had difficulties with parking. The provider was aware of this issue and had employed a parking attendant to help with the situation, however there was no space available to provide additional parking near to the hospital.
Patient feedback on external review platforms showed high levels of satisfaction with the service. The Private Healthcare Information Network reported 97% of nearly 3,000 respondents rated their overall experience of the hospital as very good or good. Another independent feedback platform awarded the hospital 5 stars based on 26 reviews. One reviewer commented: “The Nuffield Hospital in Exeter is first class. The staff are super professional and friendly, the hospital is spotless, and I would highly recommend it for any procedures.”
