Effective
Effective – this means we looked for evidence that people’s care, treatment and support achieved good outcomes and promoted a good quality of life, based on best available evidence.
At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good. This meant people’s outcomes were consistently good, and people’s feedback confirmed this.
This service scored 71 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.
Assessing needs
The provider did not always make sure people’s care and treatment were effective because they did not always check and discuss people’s health, care, wellbeing and communication needs with them.
Staff did not always ensure people and relatives were involved as much as possible in needs assessments. We received mixed feedback from people and relatives about their involvement in creating care plans and subsequent reviews. A person told us, “I haven’t got a care plan that I know of, but the care is very good.” But another added, “I have a care plan. My family helped put it together when I came here. They asked me my likes and dislikes.
Staff used an electronic care planning system to record care interventions, but records evidenced people did not always receive support in line with their assessed needs. The registered manager explained several people no longer required the same level of support, but care plans had not been updated to reflect changes.
However, people’s care plans had a good level of information about people’s backgrounds, needs and preferences. Communication care plans clearly guided staff around the best way to engage and interact with people, including those who had limited communication skills or capacity.
Following feedback, the provider confirmed people and relatives were involved in care plan reviews during resident of the day calls, assuring us they would record future conversations and any refusals.
