5 November 2013

During a routine inspection

We visited this home on 5 November 2013 and there were 17 people living at the home. During our inspection we spoke with the registered manager, two staff members, four people who lived at this home and one visitor.

We saw that the home was clean and well maintained. Care was provided over two floors with all rooms being single occupancy. People were able to personalise their rooms with their own possessions and could access their rooms whenever they chose. Few people chose to remain in their rooms throughout the day, as the communal lounge area was the hub of activity during the day. Quieter areas were available for people to use if they chose.

The home offered a wide variety of activities and functions for people to enjoy if they chose. On the day of our visit staff encouraged people to join in with a sing along session and we saw that people continued this activity as a group when staff had finished. People told us that they enjoyed each other's company and they watched television, read and listened to music together regularly.

We saw that robust risk assessments and care plans were in place to support people who lived in this home. People were involved in the planning of their care.

Staff treated people in a kind and gentle manner respecting their dignity at all times.

People told us they were happy living at this home. A relative told us, 'The staff are very kind and let me be full involved in the care they are providing.'

During a routine inspection

During our visit we saw people were being treated with dignity and respect. We spoke to three people who used the service. All confirmed they felt safe and were happy with the support they received and that the staff were committed and helpful.

We spoke to two visitors all were very positive about the service. They told us that communication was excellent and they had been involved in all discussions regarding the care of their relatives.

One visitor said 'Staff always listen to my ideas I feel totally involved in the care my wife receives'

We saw that people's privacy and independence was respected, people experienced safe and effective care based on detailed care plans and risk assessments that met individual needs.

People using the service were protected from abuse as they were supported by a staff team who had appropriate knowledge and training on safeguarding adults. We saw policies on whistle blowing and safeguarding. People's rights were respected.

We saw evidence that staff received ongoing training and supervision which provided them with the skill and knowledge to meet the needs of the people they were supporting.

The provider had effective systems in place to monitor quality assurance and compliance.

During a routine inspection

The people that live at Ferndale Residential Care Home have dementia and therefore not everyone was able to tell us about their experiences. To help us understand people' experiences we used our SOFI (Short Observational Framework for Inspection) tool. The SOFI tool allows us to spend time watching what is going on in a service and helps us to record how people spend their time, the type of support they get and whether they have positive experiences.

We spent an hour watching people in the lounge and found that overall people had positive experiences. The staff supporting them knew what support they needed and they respected their wishes if they wanted to manage on their own. The support that we saw being given to people matched what their care plan said they needed.

All people who we were able to have a conversation with said they were happy with staff and the care they received.
