People should be safe from harm from unsafe or unsuitable equipment (outcome 11)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are not at risk of harm from unsafe or unsuitable equipment (medical and non-medical equipment, furnishings or fittings).
  • Benefit from equipment that is comfortable and meets their needs.

How this check was done

Our judgement

There is suitable and sufficient equipment provided for staff and people using the service. It is well maintained and suitable for purpose. Staff are competent in using the equipment.

User experience

People told us that they were happy with the equipment provided to them and that the staff were competent in its use.

Other evidence

During a tour of the home we saw a number of pieces of equipment in use including a hoist and walking frames. We saw that staff were using them properly and supporting people effectively.

Care records we saw had information and risk assessments about the individual equipment in use and two out of the three we saw had been recently updated to reflect the equipment in use. The deputy manager said she would update one we saw to reflect the new equipment in use.

The deputy manager told us that the NHS loan equipment store is very good and the equipment ordered for them by visiting district nurses or physiotherapists arrives quite quickly and is subsequently maintained by them. Equipment owned by the home was maintained by outside contractors. Stickers were seen on pieces of equipment to show the date of the last safety check.
