Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

All the people and relatives we spoke to told us, all staff from Calverton Supreme Home Care were kind, compassionate and treated them with dignity. People’s comments were, “They [staff] provide excellent care: kind and compassionate. They provide respectful personal care.” “They [staff] are very kind and provide respectful personal care. They observe my privacy and dignity. They are very nice and I get on well with them.” A relative told us, “They [staff] give my wife excellent, respectful personal care, observing her privacy and dignity.”

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

The provider treated people as individuals and ensured care, support and treatment met their needs and preferences. Staff considered people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and protected characteristics. Staff and the management team knew people well and provided care in line with their wishes. One person told us, “I am 96 now and these girls really do look after me well. I attend hospital once a month and a carer always comes with me.” This meant people received personalised, respectful care that reflected their needs and preferences.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider promoted people’s independence, ensuring they understood their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. There was clear written guidance for staff outlining the tasks and support each person required at every visit, as well as what people could safely do for themselves. Records reflected people’s preferences; for example, they included information about the foods people liked and how they preferred these to be presented, while also reminding staff to ask people on the day to ensure choice was upheld. This meant people were supported to remain as independent as possible and to have ongoing choice and control over their care.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. A family member told us the staff worked well with their family member’s mental health nurse. They told us, “The staff are as responsive as they can be according to my [family member] moods. [Name] will not allow [staff] to help her some days. Sometimes the mental health nurse has to give her medication to help with her mood and calm [family member] down.” This meant people received care that was responsive, compassionate and tailored to their individual needs and circumstances.
