Our view of the service
Derian House Children’s Hospice provides services for children and young people from across the North West of England with life limiting or life-threatening conditions. The hospice is set in its own grounds and provides accommodation in the main house and the adjacent lodge. The hospice has 7 beds for 0 to 16 year olds and 4 beds for 16 to 26 year olds, one end of life care suite, Sunflower suite, with a family lounge attached and five fully accessible en-suite family apartments.
We carried out an unannounced onsite comprehensive assessment on 23 September 2025. We carried out the assessment as a response to concerns raised about the governance and oversight of the service and systems in place were not effective. We did not find evidence to support these concerns.
A team of 2 CQC inspectors, an operations manager and 1 CQC medicines inspector visited the service.
During the assessment we spoke with staff, leaders, trustees and people who used the service. We looked at care records, policies and procedures, complaints, incidents and observed care.
Overall, the service was rated as good.
People's experience of this service
Family members of children that we spoke with provided positive feedback about the service and told us they were supported well by the staff. We were told that the environment was great for families and children, and the facilities were easy to access.
