Our view of the service

Date of assessment: 2 September to 4 September 2026.

This assessment was a follow up from the previous assessment where the service was found to be in breach of regulations relating to safe care and treatment and good governance. Improvements were found at this assessment, and the provider was no longer in breach of this regulation.

Cockington House is a residential care home providing personal care for up to 6 people living with a learning disability and autistic people. Accommodation is provided over 2 floors. A communal lounge with a dining room, and kitchen are based on the ground floor. At the time of our assessment there were 4 people using the service who were in receipt of a regulated activity.

We assessed the service against the ‘Right Support, Right Care, Right Culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted.

People were supported to make their own decisions around their care. People had access to the community with support and were able to decide where they wanted to go, and when.

People were involved in meal planning and shopping.

The environment had improved since the last assessment; however, some issues were found with safety maintenance. This was raised with the provider who took immediate action.

People received dignified care that respected their privacy.

There was no registered manager in the service at the time of the assessment, however management cover was in place whilst the provider carried out safe recruitment for a suitable candidate.

Staff told us they felt the support had improved in the home. They felt able to raise concerns with the relief manager and felt confident the issues raised would be taken seriously and addressed.

Governance systems and process had improved, however further work was required to strengthen them.
