17 December 2025

Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

This service scored 65 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

Relatives told us staff were friendly and kind. Comments included, “The carers do seem to have a genuine kindness for mum and it doesn't seem fake or put on” and “All the staff we have met are always lovely to her, they know her really well. They are so caring, they know how to distract her and this helps us. Staff are respectful of family time together.” Another relative said when they had reported to the management team that some staff were not very friendly, this had resulted in a positive change with these staff.

A health care professional told us, ‘The staff all present as caring and kind to the residents. The residents are happy, well kept and treated as individuals.’ We observed staff moving their body position so they could maintain eye contact with people to aid communication. They treated people with kindness by smiling and used a light, jovial tone of voice to support people. We observed when a person left the dining table, staff danced with the person and sang to encourage them back to eat their meal. This was an effective way of interacting with this person

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

We did not look at Treating people as individuals during this assessment. The score for this quality statement is based on the previous rating for Caring.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 2

The provider did not always promote people’s independence, so people did not always know their rights and have choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

Relatives said that people were given choices and their independence was promoted. A relative told us staff had supported their family member to become continent again since living at the service. They told us their family member needed to use incontinent pads 6 months ago, but now they are able to let the staff know when they needed the toilet. They said this was achieved because staff acted quickly when their family member indicated they needed to use the toilet.

We received feedback from a health care professional that staff did not always give people control of their lives. They described how at lunchtime staff blocked a person’s pathway so they could not move to where they wanted to go. They told us that it was clear the person did not understand the instructions staff were giving them. We observed a staff member cut up a person’s food whilst standing next to them, without first checking that they wanted this assistance. This evidenced that staff had differing skills in supporting people to be as independent as possible.
