Staff should be properly trained and supervised, and have the chance to develop and improve their skills (outcome 14)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by competent staff.

How this check was done

We reviewed all the information we hold about this provider and carried out a visit on 19/09/2012.

Our judgement

People were cared for by staff who received appropriate training to safely support them with their mobility.

The provider was meeting this standard.

User experience

People said they were properly cared for and that staff had a good understanding about the kind of support they needed.

Other evidence

Prior to our visit we received information alleging that staff did not receive any training about moving and handling people and how to use hoists.

We observed people being supported with their mobility. We saw no evidence to indicate that people were at risk of injury from unsafe moving and handling practices.

We inspected four staff training records and found in each case that moving and handling training had been undertaken. This was also covered within the induction programme.

The provider may find it useful to note that when we spoke with staff and looked in the staff training records we found that supervision arrangements were inconsistent and needed to be more robust so that staff were properly supported and fully clear about their roles.
