During a routine inspection

People we spoke with confirmed that staff communicated well with them and asked for their permission before any care or treatment took place. One person commented 'I find them very helpful.' Staff understood that, even though people had dementia, they could make choices and some decisions about their care.

We observed staff supporting people in a friendly, patient and professional manner. Staff understood how people expressed their needs and preferences and responded appropriately. One person commented, 'people are very nice to me and look after me well.' Another person told us, 'everybody tries to help me.'

People who use the service told us that they felt safe. They said they had no concerns or complaints about their care but would speak with their relatives, the manager or the care worker if they needed to.

Effective recruitment and selection processes where in place and appropriate checks were undertaken before staff began work.

We saw that the manager carried out regular checks at the home including health and safety audits to make sure people were being supported in a safe environment. The provider had an effective system to regularly assess and monitor the quality of service that people receive.

During a routine inspection

There were 44 people living at Parkview House when this inspection took place. We found accommodation and care was provided within five small units. We spoke with five people using the service, to four relatives, staff and the manager. Some people had limited communication abilities and so we could not interview them to learn about their views. However, we were able to observe people's mood, their behaviour and how they interacted with staff.

We found that people using the service were being cared for by appropriately qualified, experienced and competent staff. Staff were fully supported by skilled, knowledgable and experienced managers to carry out their role.

Relatives we spoke with told us that staff were caring, friendly and experienced. One relative told us that the manager "goes the extra mile" to ensure that relatives are fully involved in the home and the lives of people they care for.

We found that medicines were well managed, with proper administration, record keeping and storage.

We found that people were cared for in a clean environment and were protected from the risk of infection.

We observed people being appropriately supported by staff at the home. People told us they enjoyed the food at the home and there was always enough to eat.

Staff we spoke with had a good understanding of the needs of the people they supported.

People who use the service indicated to us that they felt safe with the staff at the home. They told us that if they had concerns about their care they would speak with their relative or the staff.
