Our view of the service
Date of assessment: 14 May 2025 to 23 May 2025. Hazelwood Care home is a care home with nursing for older people and people living with dementia. The assessment was triggered by some concerns we had received around people’s care and treatment. At the time of the inspection there were 44 people living at Hazelwood Care home. People were safeguarded from harm and abuse because the registered manager had effective processes in place. People’s health risk’s were mostly well managed, however we found that pressure relieving equipment, such as pressure reliving mattresses, were not always set to the correct setting for people’s weights. This was addressed and actioned by the registered manager to reduce the risk of occurrence. Other health risks such as diabetes were well managed.
We found that people’s emergency evacuation plans were not always up to date, however this was rectified as soon as we informed the registered manager. Other building safety checks were completed and up to date.
People’s medicines were well managed, and people got their medicines on time. We observed effective infection control procedures by staff. Staff had been recruited safely and had completed training in order for them to support people safely. The registered manager ensured there was enough staff on each shift by using a dependency tool to assess people’s needs in relation to staffing numbers.
There was a positive culture amongst staff and staff told us they felt supported by the registered manager. The registered manager carried out audits for different areas of the service to highlight and address any concerns. However, the audits had not identified the risks around pressure relieving mattresses and the fire evacuation plans. The registered manager had an improvement plan in place and was continually working to improve the service and implement new ideas to support people and staff.
