Evidence reviewed showed that people had choice and control about how they lived their life. People were encouraged and supported to do as much as they could for themselves, to maintain their independence. There were opportunities for people to partake in meaningful activities at the service.

Independence, choice and control

There were some processes in place for recording independence, choice and control. However, there was no oversight by the registered manager to identify risks of isolation to people.

Staff spoke about people with kindness and compassion. They knew people well as individuals and understood they should be supported to have choice and control. The service employed an activities co-ordinator on a part time basis to provide meaningful activities and spend time with people. Staff confirmed they did not support people to participate in leisure activities outside of their home and people could only do this with assistance from their family.

People had choice and control about how they lived their life and they told us they were supported to make informed choices. For example, people said they could choose when they got up and went to bed, and what they wore, ate, and did during the day. A person told us, “I say when it's bedtime and plan everything myself mostly. I just ask for help if I need it". People were encouraged and supported to do as much as they could for themselves, to maintain their independence. People were given the choice to undertake activities at the service, however these were not scheduled every day. Some people told us they would like to access the community or outside, but staff numbers impacted on this.
