People said they felt safe with staff and enjoyed their company. Staff knew how to report any abuse and knew people well. Staff supported people who had capacity to make decisions about risk. Risk assessments were completed to promote independence and minimise risks to people. Care plans were clear and detailed with sufficient guidance for staff to keep people as safe as possible. Referrals were made to local health professionals when required such as the community nurses and GP. There were sufficient, safely recruited staff who had received training to meet peoples’ needs.

Safeguarding

People felt safe with the staff that supported them and felt able to raise any concerns. We saw kind and respectful interactions between people and staff.

People were safeguarded from harm and abuse. Staff were trained and there were systems to report, record and review any concerns. Staff worked in line with the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) with people who lacked mental capacity to make their own decisions supported in their best interests. Appropriate legal authorisations and independent advocates were in place.

Staff told us they knew how to report any potential abuse and had had training about how to recognise abuse. They felt well supported and confident to speak up if they had any concerns.

Involving people to manage risks

Detailed care plans were in place which staff understood and followed. External professionals’ advice was sought to ensure all risks were managed. For example, in relation to wound dressings and nutrition.

People who were able told us staff helped them feel safe without minimising their independence. They felt able to move freely around the home and spend the day as they wished. People were supported and encouraged to be as independent as possible, with measures in place to minimise known risks.

Staff were visible and attentive and knew how peoples’ risks were managed. Staff ensured there were enough staff to support people, for example in the communal areas. Pressure care was well managed with daily reviews and appropriate equipment to minimise risk. The chef knew people well and ensured they received nutritious meals that suited their dietary needs and preferences.

Staff told us they had good information in care plans and handovers and electronic system alerts enabled them to be up to date with risk assessments.

Safe and effective staffing

People said they liked the staff supporting them and support was available in a timely way. Staff and the registered manager were very involved in peoples’ lives, often joining in with activities and spending time with people. One person said, “We played games with the manager, we do armchair exercises and use bean bags to keep our hands moving.”

People were supported by staff who had been safely recruited. There was a consistent staff team, with most staff having worked at the service for a long time. Staff received regular supervision, appraisal and support and records were up to date.

Staff were visible throughout our visit providing timely care and support. Staff agreed there were sufficient staffing numbers, based on peoples’ needs, with a supportive ancillary and management team. There was a friendly, homely atmosphere with all staff engaging with people throughout the visit.

Staff were happy in their roles and felt well supported. They felt they received enough training and supervision where they could talk freely. All staff said how lovely the registered manager was and how the provider visited regularly and spent time with them.
