Our view of the service

Dates of assessment 16 February to 5 March 2026.

Foxleigh Grove Nursing Home provides support to older people, including those living with physical disabilities. At the time of assessment, 34 people were living in the service. This assessment was carried out because of the age of the rating, and the breaches of regulations in relation to safe care and treatment and good governance in 2020. At this assessment, we found improvements had been made, and the provider was no longer in breach of regulation.

The provider was responsive to areas for improvement noted during the assessment but had not always recognised these areas themselves. For example, competency assessments were not always in place, and there were some gaps in recruitment records. The provider took immediate action to address these areas. Some people living at the home lived with dementia. However, we found there were some areas in which people with dementia could be supported better in line with the environment and adaptations. We shared a dementia environmental assessment tool with the provider.

There were enough staff available to keep people safe and to meet their needs in a timely way. Systems were in place to identify and reduce risks to people. People received their medicines as prescribed, from staff who had been trained in medicines management. People told us staff were kind and caring. Where people lacked capacity to make decisions for themselves, their care records showed decisions had been made in their best interests.

People were supported to have maximum choice and control over their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible. The policies and systems in the service support this practice.
The service worked closely with community health professionals to support people with their health needs. The provider had effective systems in place to deal with any complaints. The registered manager completed regular audits of the service to make sure action was taken and lessons were learned when things went wrong.

People's experience of this service

People and relatives told us they felt safe, supported, and cared for at Foxleigh Grove Nursing Home. Meal choices were available and homemade on site, and people were able to make individualised choices where needed.People told us, “I like it here. I like it mostly because it is so peaceful and quiet”, “By and large all my personal care is done very well”, and “The staff are brilliant. I can’t fault any of them at all. They all go beyond their bare remit. The staff are fairly consistent, in the sense of which of them come to assist me, some of them do revolving shifts but they are all, invariably good at what they do and how they do it.”

There were activities provided for people, with additional options of using the in-house minibus provided by the service. However, we found some people who were unable to leave their rooms did not experience much interaction and activities. Staff were observed being kind, gentle, and engaging, supporting people’s emotional and social wellbeing. However, we observed staff did not always ensure they knocked on people’s doors before entering to ensure their permission was sought first.

Several people told us they felt confident raising concerns, and they felt these would be addressed appropriately. Relatives told us the service could be more proactive in initiating reviews and feedback. However, relatives felt involved in decision making and updates from the service and visiting professionals. Relatives told us, “Everyone is always helpful when we come here. If you ask a question or need some help, they answer and react promptly”, “Some of the staff go out of their way to make our relative’s day happy and to arrange outings and events” and “The manager is on everything. [They have] an incredibly sharp powers of observation and holds incredible depth of knowledge about each [person] .”

The provider told us they invited relatives to join a WhatsApp group to support communication about their family member. Overall, people felt cared for in a safe, responsive, and compassionate environment.
