Our view of the service

Date of assessment 13 October 2025 to 06 November 2025. Orchard House Nursing Home is a home for older adults, including those living with dementia. It provides care to people who need personal and nursing care. The building is adapted to provide care and can accommodate 31 people. Twenty-nine people were living at the service at the time of our assessment. The service was led by a registered manager who had been in post for 18 months. We found 4 breaches of regulation regarding how personalised care was for people, a lack of consent for some restrictions on people’s privacy, provision of a safe environment and governance of the service. We completed a comprehensive assessment of the service and have rated the service requires improvement. The registered manager and team were very responsive regarding issues we found during the inspection. However, the systems in place had not enabled the registered manager and team to identify shortfalls in the safety and quality of people’s care for themselves and in some cases the necessary policies and procedures were not in place. We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to some of the concerns found at this assessment. In instances where CQC has decided to take civil or criminal enforcement action against a provider, we will publish this information on our website after any representations and/or appeals have been concluded.

People's experience of this service

Overall people and their loved ones were happy with the care provided at the home. People and relatives told us they felt safe. One relative said; “When we aren’t visiting [our loved one] we know she is safe and being well looked after.” People told us they were happy with the standard of cleanliness at the home. One person told us, “[The staff] are always cleaning.” One relative we spoke with had a concern about cleanliness which the registered manager told us had been addressed. Aside from this, all the relatives we spoke with were happy with the cleanliness of the home, and particularly the laundry service their relatives received. People spoke positively about the staff team and generally felt there were enough staff available to support them. A couple of people we spoke with told us the staff response to care calls was not always quick. People and relatives we spoke with were happy with the range of activities available to them. People described staff as kind and caring. Most people and relatives we spoke with were happy with the food and drinks provided to them and the encouragement they received to eat and drink well. One relative felt more could be done to support their loved one with particular needs in this area which we shared with the registered manager. Some relatives told us about the improvements they had seen in their loved ones’ wellbeing since moving into the home. People and relatives knew who the manager was. They told us they knew how to raise a concern or a complaint if they had one. Relatives told us they and their loved ones were involved in reviews of their care, and that communication about any changes to their needs was very good.
