Our view of the service

Dates of Assessment: 21 to 28 July 2026

Westfield Residential Home provides accommodation and personal care for older people, including people living with dementia. There were 22 people living at the service at the time we inspected.

People and relatives were largely positive about the quality of care, kindness of staff and the atmosphere within the home. Staff and healthcare professionals consistently described caring relationships and a service that worked well with external healthcare partners to support people’s wellbeing.

People told us they felt safe living at the home and we found examples of effective partnership working, responsive support when people became unwell, and person-centred care tailored to people’s preferences and needs. The home was clean, welcoming and staff generally knew people well. Leaders had introduced a range of improvements following changes in ownership and management, including the implementation of an electronic care planning system, new audits and strengthened governance arrangements.

However, the assessment identified areas where further improvement was needed. During the transition from paper records to the electronic care planning system, some care records, risk assessments and monitoring documentation were incomplete or not always easy to access. Feedback regarding staffing levels and response times, particularly at night, was mixed, with some relatives reporting delays when people required assistance.

Following inspection feedback, leaders responded promptly and provided evidence of actions taken, including record reconciliation, enhanced auditing, additional risk alerts, medicines improvements, training oversight and strengthened governance systems. These actions demonstrated a commitment to improvement. However, they were not yet fully embedded at the time of our inspection visit. Overall, the service demonstrated a caring culture with approachable leaders and committed staff.

People's experience of this service

People and relatives were generally positive about their experience of living at Westfield Residential Home. Many described a caring, welcoming environment where people felt safe, supported and treated with dignity and respect. Feedback indicated staff knew people well, responded to changes in their health needs and worked with families and healthcare professionals to promote wellbeing.

People told us staff were kind and compassionate in their interactions. One relative said, “I’m thoroughly happy with the care they’re providing. They (staff) are all nice and caring and seem to enjoy their job. It feels a bit like home.” Another relative commented, “I’ve not come across anybody that’s not capable. All of the staff are lovely and really caring.”

People and relatives described positive support to maintain wellbeing and independence. Relatives told us people had access to activities and opportunities for social interaction, including music, flower arranging and helping with everyday tasks. One relative said, “There’s plenty of activities happening and things for my [relative] to do. [Name] gets involved in things like folding the napkins and flower arranging.” Another relative told us, “They’ve encouraged [Name] to join in and have meals with the other residents.”

Relatives also spoke positively about how staff supported people with their healthcare needs and kept them informed. One relative told us, “They keep us informed of what’s happened and what they’re doing about it.” Another said, “I think there’s a good spread of different levels of staff. Even on a weekend when you visit they have everything under control.”

People told us drinks and meals were readily available, staff encouraged people to eat and drink, and the home was clean and well maintained. Although some relatives raised concerns about delays when requesting assistance, particularly at night, they continued to describe the overall atmosphere as caring and supportive. Overall, feedback showed most people experienced a service where staff were approachable, respectful and committed to providing personalised care.
