Our view of the service

Dates of assessment: 28 May to 27 June 2026. We visited the service on 28 May 2026. Britannia Care is a purpose-built residential care home for up to 40 adults, some of whom may be living with dementia.

Care and support was person centred, with staff promoting privacy, dignity and a sense of safety. We observed respectful interactions and staff involving people in activities. Infection prevention and control arrangements were effective, the environment was clean, and we observed safe moving and handling techniques being used.

The provider was outstanding in the ways in which they supported people’s cultural needs. For example, having separate communal spaces to support different activities including forms of worship, having staff who could speak several languages, so people were able to express their needs well, and rooms that were highly personalised to suit every individual. The care home utilised relationships with local churches, mosques and other places of worship to provide a range of opportunities, both secular and religious. In addition, they worked in partnership with local colleges and the university to provide both a recruitment and training pipeline as well as additional opportunities for people for social interactions.

The provider demonstrated a strong commitment to valuing and supporting their staff, a variety of shift patterns were available, and all staff we spoke to confirmed they were involved and influenced the quality of the service provided. Staff gave us examples of their leaders’ proactive attitude towards improvement, and we met people who had worked for the service for several years having been developed and promoted into senior roles.

Medicines administration required some improvement. The provider was responsive to the assessment feedback and took immediate action to rectify the shortfalls identified.

The provider was in breach of legal Regulation 17 of The Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 in relation to Governance. The provider took immediate steps to make improvements and completed an action plan to address areas of concern.

People's experience of this service

Feedback from people living at the home and relatives was overwhelmingly positive, with everyone we spoke to saying they would recommend the service. People described staff as kind, caring and supportive, and most said they felt safe living at the home. One relative commented, “I feel [person] is kept very safe here,” with a person telling us, “I feel safe because the staff always check who comes into the building.”

People felt there were enough staff available during the day. One person said, “The staff always have time for a chat with me,”and relatives spoke positively about staff skills and knowledge. A relative told us, “The staff here know what they are doing… [person]can be quite difficult, but it seems the staff can manage them.”

People were complimentary about the quality of care they received and felt staff treated them with dignity and respect. One person said, “They never make me feel inadequate,” while another commented, “When I need help, they never make me feel uncomfortable.” A relative added, “I am in debt to the staff and home; they care for my relative beautifully.”

People enjoyed being able to make their own choices and maintain their independence. They told us they could decide how to spend their day, what to wear and when to get up or go to bed. Activities, trips and entertainment were valued, with 1 person describing a recent fashion show as “a good laugh.” Food was also well regarded, with people reporting good choice and the opportunity for second helpings.

Healthcare support was readily available, and people felt staff responded appropriately when medical input was needed. People also described the home as clean and their bedrooms as well maintained and personalised. One person said, “My room is very clean; they do it every day.”

Areas for improvement included involving people and their relatives more formally in care planning, reviews and feedback processes, as most could not recall seeing or contributing to a care plan or completing satisfaction surveys.

Overall, people’s experiences reflected a caring and inclusive service where they felt respected, supported and able to maintain a good degree of independence. As one person summarised, “We do what we want when we want.”
