Our view of the service

Date of Assessment: 19 August 2026 to 08 September 2026.

The Towans Care Home provides care and accommodation for up to 28 older people. At the time of our assessment, 21 people were living at the home. The provider also offers respite (short stay) care at the home.

People were protected from abuse and avoidable harm because staff had training and understood their responsibilities in keeping people safe. Staff knew how to recognise the signs of abuse and what action to take should they suspect it.

Risks to people’s health and wellbeing were identified and planned for. Staff knew what to do to reduce risks and followed people’s individual risk assessments and care plans.

We received mixed feedback regarding staffing levels. The provider had taken action to improve the staffing levels prior to this assessment.

Staff had training in the safe management of medicines. Medicines were managed safely. Infection prevention and control measures were in place, and the home was mainly clean throughout. We identified 1 area in the laundry which required cleaning.

Regular safety checks were carried out to make sure the premises and equipment were safe and in good working order. Water temperatures were above safe limits in 1 persons bedroom. There were no risk assessments in place detailing the control measures in place to prevent scalding, the provider was taking action to rectify the water temperature. The provider had an action in place to improve the safety of the environment and they could demonstrate progress against their plan, including the water temperature issues.

Staff received training relevant to their role. They had supervision meetings with their line managers to discuss any learning or development needs. Staff felt supported and were treated equally. Staff were positive about their work and the people they supported.

Staff supported people with kindness and compassion. They encouraged people’s independence and protected their privacy and dignity.

There was a clear staff structure, and staff understood their roles and responsibilities. There were a range of systems in place to monitor the quality and safety of the service.

The registered manager and provider were exceptionally passionate about delivering high standards and compassionate care which empowered people and was person centred.
