Our view of the service

We completed assessment visits to Ailwyn Hall on 28 January 2025, 29 January 2025 and 03 February 2025. We began our assessment due to ongoing risks we had identified within the service. We gave our feedback to the service on 28 February 2025. This is a care home for up to 41 people with dementia. At the time of our assessment 39 people were living at the service.

The last rating of the service was good (published 17 April 2021). At this assessment the rating has changed to requires improvement. People were not protected from the risk of harm and abuse. We initially identified several concerns around medication management, restrictive practice and accessibility to facilities within the service. We addressed this with the service initially, and they made some improvements. We identified several other concerns throughout our assessment around the day-to-day management and oversight of the service. Staff did not have the experience or skills to safely support people living in the service or to de-escalate altercations between people. There was not consistently a varied nutritious option at mealtimes and drinks and snacks not frequently offered. We identified concerns around the activity provision within the service and identified contradictions within care plans that the services quality assurance audits had failed to identify. The services own policies and procedures were not always followed and audits, lessons learnt, and improvement plans were not embedded within the environment.

We found the service to be in breach of 4 regulations in relation to person-centred care, safe care and treatment, good governance, and staffing. In instances where CQC have decided to take civil or criminal enforcement action against a provider, we will publish this information on our website after any representations and/ or appeals have been concluded.

People's experience of this service

Everyone living in the service had advanced dementia and were not able to tell us about their experiences. We therefore observed how people were cared for and supported. We spoke to relatives of people in the service, and they were happy with the care provided and raised no concerns. They expressed that they were actively involved in the review of people’s care and support needs. They felt that people were looked after properly, and they could visit when they would like. They felt the service supported people’s individual needs and ensured people were referred to other health care professionals when required. We spoke to healthcare professionals who worked alongside the service to support people and most feedback we received was positive, the only concern was the communication could be improved on occasions. While the relatives we spoke to expressed that they were generally happy with their care, our assessment found elements of care did not meet the expected standards.
