Our view of the service

Date of assessment: 13 August to 4 September 2026. Hoylake Cottage is a residential care home providing nursing and personal care for a maximum of 62 people. At the time of our assessment, 60 people were living at the service, some of whom were living with dementia.

Some improvements were identified with regards to the records maintained by staff and to ensure people enjoyed the same standard of dining experience across the service. The provider had governance systems in place and committed to strengthening these processes to drive improvements in this area.

Detailed assessments were undertaken when people moved into the service and personalised care plans were developed which guided staff to mitigate risk and deliver good person-centred support. Staff worked well as a team and felt supported and valued by the leadership team. The registered manager was receptive to all feedback we provided and was demonstrably committed to delivering good care.

Systems were in place to ensure people received their medicines as prescribed and were supported to access healthcare and other specialist services. Staff worked with other professionals and organisations to ensure positive outcomes were achieved for people.

Staff were recruited appropriately, understood people’s needs and received the training they needed to support people safely and effectively.

The environment was clean and well maintained. A programme of refurbishment was underway.

People's experience of this service

People and their family members spoke positively about the quality of care provided. Staff were described as kind and attentive. Some people told us they felt lucky to have found such a caring place to live.

We completed observations using the short observational framework for inspection tool (SOFI). SOFI is a tool used by inspectors to capture the experiences of people who use services who may not be able to express this for themselves. Our observations demonstrated staff to be caring, attentive and respectful.

People were supported by a staff team who knew them well. Staff engaged well with people and sought consent before assisting them with their care. Staff encouraged people to make decisions and be as independent as they were able to be. Families and friends were free to visit when they wished. Where appropriate, people were assisted to spend their time in shared communal or quieter individual living spaces.

A variety of activities were available for people to enjoy and staff worked hard to cater for different interests of people.
