Our view of the service

Inspection dates: 11 to 19 December 2025. Croft House Care Home provides care for people living with dementia and physical disabilities. The service could support up to 29 people and 25 people were being supported at the time of the assessment. The environment was welcoming and homely, with personalised rooms and seasonal decorations. However, some safety issues were noted, including damaged fire doors, short emergency pull cords, and missing window restrictors. The provider addressed these issues promptly, and further remedial work was scheduled. While people were generally safe, enforcement action was taken by West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue regarding fire door compliance. Further work was scheduled for January 2026 to ensure the environment was compliant with Fire regulations. Care was person-centred, and staff knew individuals well, supporting choice and independence in daily routines. However, care plans were not always consistently written or updated, and consent recording required improvement. Staffing levels were mostly safe, training was up to date, and staff spoke positively about supervision and support, though relatives suggested additional weekend cover. Medicines were administered on time, but governance oversight needed strengthening through more robust audits to ensure areas of improvement were identified and timely action was taken.

Leadership was visible and approachable, and relatives valued improved communication under the new registered manager. A positive culture of openness was evident, with staff confident to raise concerns and safeguarding managed appropriately. The provider had introduced enhanced learning sessions and plans for digital transformation, which demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement. Overall, Croft House Care Home offered a caring and supportive environment, with strong teamwork and a focus on learning, though further work was needed to embed robust governance and documentation practices.

People's experience of this service

People told us they felt happy and comfortable living at Croft House Care Home. People described it as “a lovely place to live,” and relatives said staff not only cared for their loved ones but also supported families. One relative commented, “They not only care for my relative but they also care for me.” People said they felt safe, and most reported call bells were answered promptly. Relatives suggested additional weekend staff would improve responsiveness.

Meals were praised for quality and choice, with a person saying, “The soups are always so very tasty and filling.” Relatives highlighted food was freshly cooked and tailored to preferences, and some noted improvements in people’s health since moving in. People could choose what to wear, eat, and do during the day, and requests for changes were usually accommodated. One person told us, “I can do what I want when I want. The staff help me if I need help but encourage me to be independent.”

Staff were observed interacting kindly and respectfully, supporting people at mealtimes without rushing. People were supported to present themselves in a way they wished to, and relatives praised laundry services, saying nothing went missing. Activities were available and engaging. However, while some people enjoyed them, others felt they were not always inclusive or age appropriate. Trips out had previously taken place, and people hoped these would resume.

Relatives’ meetings had restarted and were valued as a forum to share views. People and families said they knew how to raise concerns and felt listened to, with written reassurances provided when complaints were made. Visitors described the service as welcoming and homely, with lounges decorated for the season. Overall, people experienced a caring and supportive environment where staff promoted dignity, choice, and independence, though improvements are needed in activity provision and ensuring timely responses at all times.
