Our view of the service

Assessment date: 20 and 23 January 2026. Craven Nursing Home provides care and support for older people, including those living with dementia. The environment was clean, welcoming and homely, with personalised bedrooms and well maintained‑ communal spaces.

The service provided safe care. Staff were safely recruited, and there were enough skilled staff on duty to meet people’s needs. Medicines were managed safely with strong clinical oversight, robust auditing and effective use of the electronic medication system, supported by proactive partnership working with the pharmacy and GP. Risks were assessed and reviewed, and staff understood safeguarding and escalation processes.

People experienced positive mealtime support and told us staff knew their needs well. Care plans were detailed and person-centred‑. Staff worked closely with GPs, speech and language therapists and social workers, with clear audit trails showing guidance was followed.

People experienced caring and compassionate support. They consistently described staff as kind, patient and respectful, and relatives highlighted the supportive atmosphere and good communication. Staff promoted independence, choice and control, and people were involved in decisions about their care.

The service was responsive to people’s needs, with complaints, concerns and feedback used to drive improvement. People were supported to participate in meaningful activities, maintain routines and plan for future care, including end of‑ ‑life wishes.

Leadership was strong. Staff and relatives praised the visibility, approachability and effectiveness of managers. Governance arrangements were robust, with audits leading to clear and sustained improvements. Overall, Craven Nursing Home demonstrated a positive, learning focused culture with high standards‑ of care and consistently good outcomes for people.

People's experience of this service

People told us they had a positive experience living at Craven Nursing Home. They described feeling safe, well cared for and consistently treated with kindness and respect. Several people said they “couldn’t have picked a better place”, and relatives repeatedly referred to the home as “fabulous”, praising the welcoming atmosphere, attentive staff and clean, homely environment. We observed calm, warm interactions throughout the day, with staff responding promptly when people asked for help. One person told us, If I buzz, it’s only moments before someone appears.”

People felt they had genuine choice and control over daily life. People told us they could decide when to get up, what to wear and how to spend their day, with one person saying, “If I want a lie in I can… if I fancy a walk along the canal there is always a member of staff to take me.” People enjoyed a varied programme of activities led by dedicated staff, including baking, themed events, church visits and regular minibus outings, with individuals supported to take part in meaningful one to‑ ‑one trips.

Mealtimes were described as relaxed and well supported, with people consistently telling us the food was “lovely” and that there was always a choice. Drinks and snacks were easily available in communal spaces. Relatives said staff kept them informed and involved, highlighting good communication about care plan reviews and any changes.

People told us they felt comfortable raising concerns and were confident they would be taken seriously, although no one we spoke with had felt the need to complain. Staff were described as approachable and respectful, and several relatives said the manager’s “open door‑” approach helped them feel welcome and included.

Overall, people experienced compassionate, personalised care delivered by staff who knew them well. The atmosphere was consistently calm and supportive, and people told us they felt valued, listened to and part of a caring community.
